Tannat

Tannat is a bold red wine grape with thick skins and very high tannin levels. Originally from southwest France (notably the Madiran region), it is now the national flagship grape of Uruguay. The wine offers deep dark fruit flavors, high structure, and exceptional aging potential.

Key Characteristics

Flavor Profile: Blackberry, plum, dark cherry, dark chocolate, smoke, and licorice.

Structure: Full-bodied, high acidity, and massive, grippy tannins.

Health Benefits: Contains some of the highest levels of heart-healthy antioxidants (polyphenols and resveratrol) among red wine grapes.

Regional Styles

Uruguay: Produces a softer, more approachable, and fruit-forward style with lush textures, though still powerful.

Southwest France (Madiran): Traditionally yields a more rustic, highly tannic, and austere wine in its youth that benefits greatly from long-term cellaring.

Other Regions: Also grown in small quantities in places like California, Texas, and Australia, often blended or crafted as a bold single-varietal.
