Honey, I Bought a Winery

Jim moved to Oregon more than 50 years ago from Idaho to go to college in the Willamette before transferring to the University of Oregon. He has dabbled in a few things but has primarily been in Equipment Leasing business for more than 30 years., when the Oregon wine scene was just taking off. He made friends with people from Dundee and Newberg, which began his love of Oregon wines. Over time, through tasting a variety of different wines, he developed his palate.

Susan started her career in the restaurant business as a waitress and bartender where she learned about different wines, marketing them, and enjoying them. She has a background in advertising, marketing, and public relations, but above all, customer service has always been her secret power.

Cellar 503 Tasting Notes

Rose & Fern Cellars, Portland, Oregon
2023 Sauvignon Blanc

Columbia River Gorge

This velvety white wine exemplifies the sweetness of Spring with notes of honeysuckle and vanilla.

Eight years ago, Jim had a wine storage facility as a leasing client. One of the clients at the storage facility was a solo winemaker and she had just lost her investor when Jim showed up for a meeting. So Jim bought all the wine. Jim came home from the meeting, looked Susan in the eye and said, “Honey! I bought a winery!”.

Susan was stunned but Jim was on fire with excitement. Susan had never seen him so filled with possibility. They gave it a shot and have been in business for 9 years and making wine with Joe Williams of D’Anu Wine for the past 8 years.

We are happy to report, they are still married.

Pro-Tip: They offer free wine tasting at every farmers market they're at, so if you see them at one - be sure to stop and taste their whole line up.
