The orchards around Milton-Freewater produce some of the best apples in the world. Over the last several decades, the Brown family has developed a reputation for producing some of the highest-quality fruit in the region. And their Blue Mountain Cider Company is renowned for its hard ciders.
In 2001, the Browns decided to try their hand at growing wine grapes. With several estate vineyards on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla AVA and The Rocks District AVA, Leonard (“Uncle Leo”) Brown was committed to using sustainable farming practices to produce grapes deeply rooted in the terroir.
At first, the plan was to grow grapes and sell them. But after a few years, the winemakers at Chateau Ste. Michelle told them the grapes were so good they should launch their own winery. And Watermill was born.
Now, Andrew Brown is the second-generation winemaker (and cidermaker) leading the way. Whether it’s the classic Bordeaux blends or single-varietal wines like Mourvèdre and Chardonnay, Watermill’s wines are a showcase for the Milton-Freewater area.

Vineyard and Terroir
This Cabernet Sauvignon benefits from warm days that develop rich, concentrated fruit flavors and cool nights that preserve natural acidity. Well-drained soils contribute to balanced vine growth and exceptional fruit expression, resulting in a Cabernet that’s both vibrant and structured. The Walla Walla Valley’s diverse terroir imparts classic black currant, cassis, and refined herbal complexity notes.
Production
This 2021 vintage was aged for 14 months, with 25% matured in new French oak barrels and the remainder in neutral oak. This thoughtful approach enhances the wine’s structure and adds subtle oak influence, while allowing the purity of the fruit to shine. Careful vinification preserves the Cabernet’s hallmark richness and elegance, creating an immediately enjoyable wine worthy of short-term aging.
Tasting Notes
This Cabernet Sauvignon opens with bold aromas of rich black currants, ripe Bing cherries, and cassis. The palate follows with plush dark fruit flavors layered with subtle notes of anise and gentle, polished tannins. Balanced acidity lifts the wine, leading to a generous, lingering finish. Ideally suited for grilled meats, hearty stews, and aged cheeses, this Cabernet is equally enjoyable now or after a few years in the cellar.
